Software that optimizes your website for you is not recommended. If you want software for keyword research & such, that’s a different story.

Different search engines have different criteria for high-ranking websites. I’ll just assume that you want to rank better in Google cuz they’re the biggest.

Google’s big thing is inbound links. Quantity doesn’t matter nearly as much as relevance and quality. Focus on getting one-way links from websites related to yours (topically) and who are in good standing with Google.

I believe that reciprocal links and a spurt of low-quality/questionable quality links still work for Yahoo. I don’t know about longevity with this method, but it worked for me for several years.

MSN seems to pay attention to you after you get some low-quality links from spam-like sites (or submitting your sites RSS feeds), but MSN focuses more attention to your website’s content than the value of inbound links.

However, since there’s a large overlap here on what works & what doesn’t for certain search engines – I would checkout sites like http://seobook.com and some webmaster forums like webmasterworld.com, forums.digitalpoint.com and so forth & listen in on some of the seo conversations over there.

If seo services are a separate service, what is the usuall rate for these servicces?

SEO considerations should be accounted for even before one web page, much less a whole site, is created. However, since doing the SEO work takes time and effort there is usually an extra fee for that work. In terms of cost, as mentioned above, they vary widely. It is probably best to ask for referrals to help ensure that the company that you are working with actually knows what they are doing.

A video player is web tool. It could be designed to have an appearance that would remind of the certain brand and by having the options to be embedded and shared it could help generate links and thus contribute to the seo efforts. I see it as a web content development, quality content or link bait. What do you think?

If you put great content on your website it will increase your traffic due to relevance for what you have and what people may be searching for. A player with no videos is just a browser….so it really matters how you TAG your videos and how you embed this player in your page in a way that the crawlers can identify what the content of this page is so that they know how to categorize it into their search results.

So having a customized video player is nice for site appearance, given the content is relevant to your site and people might link to it based on quality, then yes it can’t hurt and could help improve the site’s overall traffic. I wouldn’t spend tons getting someone to do this who is trying to sell you on something.
